Overview of Malaysian PM Anwar bin Ibrahim’s 3-day State Visit to India from 19th to 21st August 2024

Prime Minister (PM) His Excellency the King of Malaysia Dat‘ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim Was on a 3-day state visit to India from 19 August to 21 August 2024 at the invitation of the Prime Minister (PM) of India. Narendra Modi Strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

  • This is Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim’s first visit to India as well as the South Asia region since he became the Prime Minister of Malaysia in 2014. 2022.
  • During his visit to India, he was accompanied by a high-level delegation that included Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamed bin Haji Hassan; Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment Trade and Industry; Gobind Singh Deo, Digital Minister, among others.

Highlights of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to India:

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim arrived in New Delhi on 20 August 2024. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi and later visited Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

  • During his visit to India, he held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and he met the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs, India.
  • On 20 August 2024 he delivered a speech at the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi.

Bilateral Meeting:

On August 20, 2024 Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar bin Ibrahim at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

  • They discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation, including political, defence and security cooperation, economic and trade, digital technology, startups, fintech, energy (renewables), healthcare, culture, etc.

I.On 20 August 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim agreed to upgrade their partnership from the Enhanced Strategic Partnership established in 2014. 2015 For a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

Second.Both countries agreed to support and expedite the review process of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Trade in Goods Agreement.AITIGAA) Making it more effective, user-friendly, simple and business-convenient for businesses, with the aim to deliver the following outcomes: 2025 and strengthening the supply chain between India and ASEAN countries.

  • Furthermore, the Prime Ministers of the two countries welcomed discussions on holding the second Joint Committee meeting of the Malaysia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. (MICECA)

iii.Bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record high. US$19.5 billion. Furthermore, the leaders of the two countries recognised cooperation between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Bank Negara Malaysia to promote the use of local currency settlement in bilateral trade and investment.

  • This initiative will encourage industries of both the countries to further facilitate invoicing and settlement of trade in local currencies, namely Indian Rupee (INR) and Malaysian Ringgit.

Fourth.The leaders of India and Malaysia agreed to strengthen cooperation in promoting sustainable energy and adapting to climate change.

  • Malaysia appreciated India-led initiatives such as: establishment of International Solar Alliance ,There is one) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)

VMalaysia appreciated India’s support for ASEAN centrality and its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship. 2025.

  • India will also work with Malaysia on its request to engage with Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa. (BRICS) stage.

Sixth.The Government of India (GOI) has permitted special allocation of the following: 2 Lakh Metric Tonne (MT) Supply of Non-Basmati White Rice to Malaysia through National Cooperative Exports Ltd. (NCEL)

  • Malaysia has sought an additional 5 lakh metric tonnes of white rice from India in 2024, in addition to the 1.7 lakh tonnes already allocated by India.

Seventh.The Government of India has decided to allocate 100 seats under India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) Programmes for Malaysian citizens in the areas of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

  • This step will promote cooperation between the two countries in the field of higher education.

Eight.Malaysia has decided to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) As its founding member.

  • The Prime Ministers of India and Malaysia encouraged early conclusion of negotiations on the IBCA Framework Agreement.

ix.Both India and Malaysia have decided to establish an Ayurveda Chair at Tunku Abdul Rahman University by the Institute of Ayurveda Training and Research (ITRA) under the Ministry of AYUSH. (UTAR) in Malaysia.

  • Besides, both countries agreed to expedite the conclusion of the MoU on Pharmacopoeia Cooperation.

X.Both India and Malaysia held discussions to establish Tiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia.

11.India and Malaysia held discussions between Start-up India and Cradle Fund of Malaysia and other stakeholders under the India-Malaysia Startup Alliance.

Twelfth.The leaders of both India and Malaysia welcomed the signing of the MoU on Digital Technologies and the establishment of the India-Malaysia Digital Council.

  • The India-Malaysia Digital Council will promote cooperation in various areas of digital technology: digital public infrastructure, digital capacity building, cyber security, emerging technologies such as: quantum computing, 5G, cloud computing etc.
  • After a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India plans to integrate the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). (UPI) with Malaysia’s National Payment Network, Pennant,

9th India-Malaysia CEO Forum

I.During the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar bin Ibrahim, both leaders appreciated the initiatives taken by Malaysian Prime Minister Modi to strengthen bilateral relations. 9th India-Malaysia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) The forum will be held on August 19, 2024 in New Delhi, India.

Second.The forum was co-chaired by Nikhil Meswani, Executive Director (ED), Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), and Tan Sri Kuna Sittampalam, Chairman, Malaysia-India Business Council (MIBC).

The Government of India and the Government of Malaysia (Group of Ministers) have signed several MoUs (Memorandum of understanding) and agreements in various areas of cooperation such as: recruitment, employment and repatriation of workers; Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine; digital technologies; culture, arts and heritage, etc.

  • These agreements were signed at Hyderabad House in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim.
